🎭Culture tips

Never drink tap water (ask about ice too). Bargain gently in markets; 10–15% tipping is standard.

💳Cards & payments

Cards in tourist zones, peso cash beyond. Apps: Uber (cities), ADO buses.

📲Apps & internet

Everything works. Uber is widespread and relatively safe in cities (DiDi sometimes cheaper) — use it instead of street taxis.

🚗Driving there

Traffic keeps to the right side of the road, as in the Gulf (steering wheel on the left); IDP advised. Riviera Maya roads are easy; avoid night intercity driving and stick to toll (cuota) highways.

💵Tipping culture

10–15% customary at restaurants and ~MXN 20 for small services.

📶SIM & eSIM

Telcel has the best coverage — SIMs at any OXXO (~USD 10). eSIM available.

🚇Getting around

Fly between regions; comfortable ADO buses along the Riviera Maya, Uber in cities (not Cancún airport).

💰 Approximate cost

Cancún resorts USD 150–400 (often all-inclusive), local meal USD 5–12; Mexico City is clearly cheaper.

🛡️ Safety

Tourist zones (Cancún, Riviera Maya, central CDMX) are well-secured, but avoid night intercity travel and non-tourist areas — stick to known routes and app rides.

⚠️ Key laws before you travel

Never drink tap water. Any drug possession is a federal crime regardless of neighboring US state laws. [verify] rules on exporting artifacts/shells.

ℹ️ Laws change — verify with official sources; this is not legal advice.

💊 Restricted medications

Mexico bans pseudoephedrine/ephedrine decongestants — sale and import, even with a foreign prescription — over meth-precursor concerns. Codeine is a controlled narcotic needing a COFEPRIS prescription. Since 14 July 2026 tramadol is prescription-only too, ending its old OTC status. Adderall is banned; Ritalin needs a local Mexican prescription.

⚠️ Guidance only — always verify with the official source before traveling.
