November–April is prime season: dry, mild weather and clear water. January–February hits the sweet spot - same great weather, smaller crowds than the December holidays or the loud US spring-break stretch (March–April). May–October is cheaper and quieter but humid, with September–October the peak of hurricane season and best avoided if precision matters.

🏨Where to stay
Families: Playacar Phase 1 - gated, quiet, walkable to the beach, with green space and a walking/biking path; very kid-friendly. Couples: boutique hotels in Centro on the quieter side streets near Fifth Avenue, close to the action but away from the direct foot traffic. Budget: Gonzalo Guerrero, between Calles 20 and 34 - a lively residential area with better prices and an easy walk to the beach and downtown.
⚠️Tips & warnings
Taxis have no meters - always agree the fare before getting in, or use a ride-hailing app. Politely decline the persistent Fifth Avenue timeshare pitches (often opening with a friendly "where are you from?") and keep walking. Ask in advance what kind of beach club you're heading to - not all are family-friendly, some are alcohol-focused and loud. Check sargassum (seaweed) conditions before a beach trip, especially spring/summer, as it can cover the sand. Use ATMs inside banks or malls, not standalone street machines. Carry small pesos for taxis and tips - cards aren't accepted everywhere.
📍 On the ground
Getting around: Playa del Carmen has no airport of its own; arrival is via Cancún International Airport (about 1.5 hours by road). The cheapest, easiest option is the direct ADO bus from the airport (departs roughly every 20 minutes). A direct airport taxi is convenient but notably pricier - agree the fare upfront or book through a trusted app. Within town, walking covers most of Fifth Avenue and downtown. For farther stretches or side neighborhoods, use taxis (agree the fare first - no meters) or the cheap shared "colectivo" vans heading toward Tulum or Cancún. The Xcaret Xailing or Ultramar ferries connect Playa to Cozumel several times daily from the pier at the end of Fifth Avenue.
Halal & prayer places: Playa del Carmen is easier for halal food than Cancún - the local Muslim community confirms several reliable halal Middle Eastern restaurants downtown, and some Cancún-based Muslim travelers make a special trip here for that reason. Masjid Al-Rahman on Calle 4 Norte holds all five daily prayers, Jummah, and Ramadan events, and welcomes visitors (modest dress, headscarf for women, shoes off inside). Look for halal spots around Fifth Avenue and near the mosque.

Cost figures: Mid-range restaurant meal: ~115-195 SAR per person (a casual taco meal ~45 SAR). Mid-range hotel night: 190-350 SAR. Short in-town taxi: 20-40 SAR (always agree the fare first - no meters). ADO bus from Cancún airport: ~55 SAR per person (cheapest, easiest option). Direct airport taxi: 200-300 SAR per car (negotiate or book via app). Cozumel ferry: ~65 SAR one-way, ~130 SAR round-trip per person.

- Day 1: Arrive via Cancún airport, transfer to Playa del Carmen (ADO bus), settle in, evening stroll on Fifth Avenue with a halal dinner
- Day 2: Relaxed beach day in Playacar or a family-friendly beach club, free time for local craft shopping
- Day 3: Full-day cenote trip nearby, optionally combined with a short Tulum ruins visit or split into its own day
- Day 4: Morning ferry to Cozumel for a day of diving or snorkeling, return to Playa in the evening
