The Alps govern Austria's climate much as they do Switzerland's: the valleys (Vienna, Salzburg) reach 25–28°C in July while the highlands and mountain lakes stay ten degrees cooler on the same day — which is what makes June–September the Gulf peak around the Salzkammergut and its lakes. Vienna, further east, is more continental and hotter in summer than the mountainous west. December–March is ski season, while April–May and late October are the shoulder, when cable cars and mountain hotels close for maintenance — cheaper, but half the mountain may be shut, a repeated surprise for anyone booking those weeks.
