🏨Where to stay
Families: Prawirotaman — quieter than Malioboro, with garden-courtyard hotels, pools, and better value per riyal. Central and lively: Malioboro itself, near Tugu monument and the train station, everything walkable. Tight budget: simple, clean Prawirotaman-area guesthouses. Skip lodging near the city's nightlife fringes.
⚠️Tips & warnings
Watch for the well-known "batik gallery" approach near Malioboro Street: a friendly stranger opens with small talk unrelated to batik, builds rapport, then invites you to a "student exhibition" that ends in high-pressure batik sales at inflated prices — politely decline unsolicited invitations and shop instead at Pasar Beringharjo or the shops around Taman Sari/Pasar Ngasem, comparing prices at more than one stall. Buy Borobudur and Prambanan tickets online ahead of time — the combined ticket was discontinued in 2025. Modest dress is required at temples and the palace (sarongs are provided free at Borobudur). Expect heavier traffic June–August, so book hotels and tours ahead.

Getting around: The newer Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) sits about an hour from downtown; Grab and Gojek run at fixed prices from an official counter in arrivals (skip unofficial airport touts). In the city, use Grab/Gojek for daily transport, with becak (pedicabs) for a short novelty ride around Malioboro. Borobudur and Prambanan sit far apart (~50km) — a full-day private driver or organized tour beats arranging transfers yourself. The Kaliurang/Merapi highlands and Gunung Kidul caves need a hired car or jeep with driver; mountain roads aren't ideal for self-driving.
Halal & prayer places: Very high and easy — Yogyakarta is a majority-Muslim Javanese city with no real difficulty finding halal food. Local dishes (gudeg, satay, soto) are halal by default almost everywhere, and spots like Bakmi Jawa Mbah Gito and Soto Kadipiro are well known among visitors. Mosques dot every neighborhood (the historic Masjid Gedhe Kauman, Masjid Gedhe Mataram), and Malioboro/Prawirotaman hotels are well accustomed to Gulf and Malaysian Muslim guests.
Local safety: Mount Merapi, roughly 25km north of the city, remains at an official Level III "Standby" alert with ongoing intermittent eruptive activity through 2026, and Indonesian authorities enforce a mandatory 3–7km exclusion zone around the summit. This doesn't halt tourism or organized jeep tours in Kaliurang, which stay within the safe zone, but check the latest update from Indonesia's volcano monitoring agency (PVMBG) before any highland trip, and never press a driver to go beyond the permitted limits.
Cost figures: 2026 prices (in SAR): a local warung meal 5–9 SAR, an evening angkringan meal 4–6 SAR, a tourist restaurant meal 12–38 SAR. Regular Borobudur ticket ~112 SAR (sunrise ticket ~245 SAR), Prambanan ticket ~95 SAR. Grab from the airport to Malioboro 55–85 SAR. A short Merapi jeep tour ~75 SAR per jeep (split among riders), a combined Merapi + Jomblang Cave tour ~205 SAR per person. A mid-range Prawirotaman boutique hotel 90–225 SAR/night, a simple guesthouse 40–75 SAR/night.
