🗓️Best time to visit
Indonesia is an archipelago straddling the equator, so no single season covers the whole country. The broad rule — dry April–October, wet November–March — holds for Bali, Java and Lombok, but Maluku and Papua run close to the opposite. Altitude changes the experience as much as the calendar: the highlands around Ubud and Bromo are far cooler than the coast. Two dates to plan around: Nyepi, Bali's day of silence, when Denpasar airport shuts for a full 24 hours and everyone is expected to stay on their property; and the mudik exodus around Eid al-Fitr, when domestic flights sell out weeks ahead.
🕌 For the Muslim traveler
Halal food: Halal food everywhere; in Hindu-majority Bali look for the halal logo.
Prayer places: Mosques in every city; Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta is Southeast Asia's largest.
Friday is an official holiday: No
🌙Ramadan & Eid
Ramadan is strongly felt in Java and Muslim regions (some local eateries close by day) and barely noticeable in Hindu Bali. Avoid domestic travel around Eid — the 'mudik' season is the country's biggest and most congested movement of people.
🎭Culture tips
Smiling is core etiquette; avoid raising your voice. Tipping is optional but appreciated.
💳Cards & payments
Cash rules outside malls and hotels. Withdraw from BCA or Mandiri ATMs and avoid standalone street ATMs (skimming). QRIS digital payments are everywhere but need a local wallet.
📲Apps & internet
Gojek and Grab are essential for rides, delivery, and payments. WhatsApp is how you talk to hotels and drivers. All global services work.
🚗Driving there
Traffic keeps to the LEFT side of the road — opposite to the Gulf! (steering wheel on the right) Don't rent a scooter without real experience and a valid IDP — most Bali tourist injuries start there. A daily driver (~USD 40) is the right family choice.
💵Tipping culture
Not mandatory; 5–10% is kind at restaurants, plus a small extra for daily drivers.
📶SIM & eSIM
Telkomsel has the best island coverage (~USD 10 for a big official-store bundle — skip inflated airport kiosks). eSIM available.
🚇Getting around
Gojek and Grab for local transport; extensive domestic flights between islands.
💰 Approximate cost
Budget-friendly: roughly SAR 150–350 per person per day with great-value resorts.
ℹ️ Prices are approximate and subject to change
🛡️ Safety
Safe for tourists; avoid unofficial taxis and use ride apps.
⚠️ Key laws before you travel
Drug offenses carry the death penalty. Religious observances in Bali must be respected (streets close on Nyepi day). Drones need permits in tourist areas.
ℹ️ Laws change — verify with official sources; this is not legal advice.
💊 Restricted medications
Drug laws are among the world's harshest and cover common sedatives/sleep aids — carry a documented prescription for any personal medication and never carry medicines for others.
⚠️ Guidance only — always verify with the official source before traveling.
🆘 Emergency & your embassy
Police 110 · Ambulance 118

👥The Gulf traveler experience there
An honest digest from Gulf travelers' experiences — community-maintained and continuously updated.
Warm welcome for Gulf Muslims, especially in Java. Some vendor/driver persistence in tourist areas — and in Bali everyone is treated as a tourist without distinction.
