🗓️Best time to visit
April–June and September–October are best (mild mountain climate); winter is cold but quiet and scenic with snow on the surrounding peaks.
📸Top activities & landmarks
- Sheki Khans' Palace and its stained-glass 'shebeke' windows
- The historic Upper Caravanserai
- Juma Mosque
- Kish village and its ancient Caucasian Albanian church
- Traditional Sheki halva
🏨Where to stay
Staying inside the Upper Caravanserai itself is a unique experience — renovated rooms inside a genuine Silk Road inn; small boutique hotels near the palace are a comfortable alternative.
⚠️Tips & warnings
Book the overnight train ahead in peak season; visit the palace early morning to beat crowds from Baku day-tour groups.
📍 On the ground
Getting around: A comfortable overnight sleeper train from Baku (book ahead) is the most popular option; buses/marshrutkas run from Baku's international terminal (5–6 hours, cheaper); a private car takes the good highway (~4–5 hours, 300+ km). The old town itself is fully walkable; cheap local taxis cover farther spots like Kish village.
Halal & prayer places: Halal by default like the rest of Azerbaijan — most local eateries serve piti (meat stew) and grilled kebab with nothing to hunt for. The still-active Juma Mosque in the old town is a notable landmark. Alcohol is served at the tourist caravanserai hotels, as is standard in secular Azerbaijan.

Cost figures: 2026 prices: overnight train from Baku ~$7–13, bus ~$6–8, a night at the historic Karvansaray hotel 30–120 AZN (~$18–70), a local meal 15–20 AZN (~$9–12), Sheki halva by the kilo ~10–15 AZN.
