🏨Where to stay
The Old Port is the best base for tourists — close to the mosque, halal and landmarks. Mid-range hotels cluster near Place de la Madeleine and Rue Canebière. Le Panier has charming boutique heritage options.
⚠️Tips & warnings
Visit Vieux Port in the morning (before 10am) for the live fish market. A tourist train climbs to Notre-Dame de la Garde from the harbor (no need to walk). Avoid the upper Canebière area at night — it's commercial, not tourist-friendly. The Mistral wind can blow hard and close coastal roads — check weather before heading to the Calanques.

Getting around: Two metro lines (M1 blue, M2 red) cover the city center and suburbs efficiently. Three tram lines (T1, T2, T3) connect major neighborhoods — T1 serves the Old Port and downtown. An extensive RTM bus network spans 93 urban and suburban lines. A single ticket costs €1.80 and is valid for one hour across metro, tram and bus with free transfers. 24-hour (€5.20) and 72-hour (€10.80) passes are excellent value for tourists.
Halal & prayer places: Among France's strongest halal scenes — Muslims comprise 30–40% of Marseille's population. The 1st arrondissement is rich in Turkish, Tunisian, Moroccan and Pakistani restaurants — limited mosque infrastructure but genuine halal in every corner. The main mosque (Mosquée Khaled Ibn al Walid) and several others (Es-Sunnah, Al-Islah, At-Taqwa). Dozens of established restaurants (Le Puits de St Louis, Wadina, La Route des Epices, Les Délices du Maroc) plus reliable kebab fast-food.
Local safety: Cheaper than Nice or Paris, but France's most uneven big city for safety. The northern districts (13th–16th arrondissements) are linked to gang violence and best avoided. Pickpocketing concentrates at the Old Port, Saint-Charles station, the Noailles market and the No. 60 airport bus; Noailles, Belsunce and La Canebière are best skipped at night. The coastal tourist zones are heavily policed and safe by day.
