Late spring (May-early June) or early fall (September) — mild 10-20°C weather and far fewer tour buses than the July-August peak. Winter is quiet and pretty around Christmas markets but cold.

Families: apartment-style guesthouses inside the Inner Town near the main square — everything is a max 20-minute walk. Couples: historic Renaissance pensions with castle or river views in the old town core. Budget: pensions just outside the town walls, still close but calmer and cheaper. Book ahead in summer — rooms fill fast.

The town gets swamped with tour groups by day, especially July-August — visit on a weekday or stay overnight to see it calm after 5pm. Streets are cobbled and hilly, wear comfortable shoes. In-town parking is expensive (around 22 SAR/hour) — park outside the walls and walk in. If you raft the river, skip alcohol-heavy tours (a recurring complaint) and pick an operator that gives clear safety briefings and life vests. On summer evenings/weekends the main square can draw rowdy stag-party groups — families may prefer the quieter side lanes after dark.

Suggested plan:

1. Day 1: Arrive midday by bus/train from Prague, check into an Inner Town guesthouse, wander the old town lanes and main square, cross the Cloak Bridge to the castle gardens, catch sunset from Seminární zahrada garden, and enjoy a quiet dinner after the day-trippers leave.
2. Day 2: Climb the castle tower and tour the state rooms early before crowds arrive, walk the Vltava riverbank with an optional short raft float, visit the Egon Schiele Art Centre, browse craft shops on Latrán street, then head back to Prague in the afternoon.
