A green, mountainous island pairing skyscrapers like Taipei 101 with centuries-old Taoist temples, boisterous night markets, and landscapes running from southern beaches to Taroko Gorge's marble canyons in the east. Its food culture ranks among Asia's best, its high-speed rail links the island end to end in hours, and it has invested more in Muslim-friendly tourism infrastructure than almost anywhere else in East Asia despite not being a Muslim-majority country.

Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain are eVisa-eligible for a single-entry stay of up to 30 days — paid exclusively by Visa, Mastercard or JCB through the official Bureau of Consular Affairs portal. Oman is the only Gulf nationality with outright visa-exempt entry, up to 14 days. Don't conflate the eVisa (requires advance application) with full exemption — check your specific passport. Passport must be valid 6 months from entry. No formal Gulf embassies exist in Taipei due to the One-China policy; representation runs through by-appointment economic-and-cultural representative offices instead.

🗓️Best time to visit

October–December and March–April are best (18–26°C, drier and milder). June–September is hot and humid with an active typhoon season warranting itinerary flexibility; January–February can be cool and damp in the north.

🕌 For the Muslim traveler

Halal food: A relatively wide certified network for a non-Muslim country — the Chinese Muslim Association (CMA) issues declared halal certification to dozens of restaurants in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung, alongside halal Indian, Malaysian, Indonesian and Turkish restaurants. The Taiwan Halal app/site pinpoints locations precisely. Outside this network, local cuisine needs explicit questions (pork and bone broth are very common).

Prayer places: The Taipei Grand Mosque (1960) in Da'an District is the oldest and most prominent. Dedicated Muslim prayer rooms now exist at Taiwan's international airports, Taipei main station, high-speed-rail stations, thirteen national scenic areas, plus Taipei 101 and highway service stations.

🌙Ramadan & Eid

The Muslim community is small (mainly Indonesian, alongside traditional Chinese Muslims) but organised around the Taipei Grand Mosque, which hosts communal iftars and taraweeh prayers. Public life doesn't change, and certified halal restaurants continue on their normal schedule with no official Ramadan adjustment.

🎭Culture tips

Respect and modesty are central — a slight bow on greeting is common. Queuing and escalator etiquette (stand right) are strictly observed. Never stick chopsticks upright in rice (it evokes death rites). Small gifts are appreciated, given and received with both hands. English is limited outside Taipei, so a translation app helps.

💳Cards & payments

Cash is still widely used, especially at night markets and small shops, but cards and Apple Pay are common in major cities and larger stores. The EasyCard is practical for small daily purchases. ATMs are abundant and reliable.

📲Apps & internet

Google Maps is accurate for transit and the metro, Uber and LINE Taxi for cars, the Taiwan Halal app for halal spots and prayer rooms, and Taiwan Tourist Shuttle for scenic-area tourist buses.

🚗Driving there

Right-hand traffic, and an international permit is recognised. Major cities need no car thanks to the metro and high-speed rail, but exploring the east coast or mountain areas is easier with a rental car or scooter (with a temporary local permit).

💵Tipping culture

No traditional tipping culture — only some upscale hotels add an automatic 10% service charge.

Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile and FarEasTone — instant tourist SIMs from the airport kiosk, eSIM very common and available for pre-booking. Coverage is nearly comprehensive, even in mountain areas.

🚇Getting around

The Taipei MRT is clean and highly efficient, and an EasyCard pays for nearly everything — metro, buses, even convenience stores. The high-speed rail (THSR) links Taipei to Kaohsiung in about two hours. Outside major cities, scooters and local buses are the main means of transport.

Moderate by developed-Asia standards: street meal $3–6, good restaurant $15–30 pp, hotels $50–150/night. Night markets save substantially. The NT dollar has historically fluctuated within a narrow band, so no major exchange surprises.

🛡️ Safety

Among Asia's safest countries — street crime is very rare. The real risks are natural, not security-related: frequent earthquakes (an effective early-warning system gives 15–20 seconds' notice) and typhoon season (June–October) that can halt domestic travel for days. Political tension with mainland China is not felt at all in daily life or tourism. Watch for the heavy scooter traffic when crossing streets in cities.

Drug penalties are extremely severe, up to the death penalty for large-scale trafficking — no exception even for small amounts. Smoking is banned in most enclosed spaces. Spitting betel-nut residue in the street is a social and sometimes legal offence. Drink-driving penalties are strict and seriously enforced.

💊 Restricted medications

A globally advanced national health-insurance system; excellent major hospitals in Taipei and Kaohsiung. Pharmacies are common and most basic medicines are available over the counter. Dengue fever is a genuine seasonal risk in the south (summer–autumn), so mosquito precautions help.
