The Gulf's best nature, hands down: green Salalah khareef at the height of summer, cool Hajar mountains and Jebel Akhdar, pristine wadis and beaches, and calm, authentic Muscat.

Language: Arabic

Currency: Omani rial (OMR)

Time zone: UTC+04:00

🗓️Best time to visit

October–March for Muscat and the north; June–August for Salalah's khareef (25–28°C) — the Gulf's closest summer escape.

🕌 For the Muslim traveler

Halal food: Everything halal; try Omani shuwa, mishkak skewers and Omani halwa.

Prayer places: Mosques everywhere; the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is a masterpiece worth visiting.

Friday is an official holiday: Yes

🌙Ramadan & Eid

A quiet, conservative Ramadan: family iftars anchor it, and souqs come alive after taraweeh.

🎭Culture tips

Omanis value calm and modesty — lower the volume and the hurry. Mountain roads (Jebel Shams, Jebel Akhdar) need 4WD, sometimes by rule.

💳Cards & payments

Cards are common in Muscat and malls; beyond them (souqs, villages, small fuel stations) keep rial cash.

📲Apps & internet

Everything works. OTaxi and Marhaba for rides (no Uber) — outside Muscat your own car is the trip.

🚗Driving there

GCC licenses directly valid. Mountains need 4WD (enforced on the Jebel Akhdar road); mind wadis when it rains.

💵Tipping culture

Not mandatory; rounding up or 10% is a kind gesture.

📶SIM & eSIM

Omantel and Ooredoo — airport visitor packs and eSIM. Coverage holds on most mountain roads.

🚇Getting around

A rental car is near-essential (4WD for mountains); distances are long but scenic. Muscat–Salalah is a 1.5h flight.

💰 Approximate cost

Good hotel OMR 25–60, restaurant meal OMR 3–8. Jebel Akhdar resorts and Salalah in khareef cost much more.

🛡️ Safety

The UK imposes no country-specific restriction on travel to Oman, and Muscat and Salalah are running normally, with some of the region's warmest hosts. Two caveats remain: the familiar local one — mountain roads and wadis in rain, where the flash flood is the real hazard rather than the road — and a regional one, with Australia rating Oman 'reconsider your need to travel' (31 July 2026) and airspace closures or cancellations possible. Plan with some slack in the schedule.

⚠️ Key laws before you travel

The familiar Gulf rules plus nature enforcement: fines for disturbing turtles at reserves or picking wild plants; tourist drone permits are rarely granted.

ℹ️ Laws change — verify with official sources; this is not legal advice.

💊 Restricted medications

Prescription in your name for personal quantities; narcotics/psychotropics need MOH clearance.

⚠️ Guidance only — always verify with the official source before traveling.
