Armenia was the first state to adopt Christianity officially (301 AD) and carries a civilizational history spanning millennia amid the Caucasus mountains — ancient clifftop monasteries, the vast alpine Lake Sevan, and pink-stone Yerevan with its cafés and museums. It has recently become a favoured Gulf destination thanks to blanket visa exemption, low prices and relative proximity.

🛂 Visa for Saudi passport

e-Visa — 120 days

All six Gulf nationalities are visa-free on an ordinary passport for up to 180 days within any calendar year — UAE since 2017, Qatar since 2019, Kuwait since 2022, then Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Oman joined via a 22 May 2025 cabinet decision. Passport needs 6 months' validity beyond entry. Caution: some travel-blog sites cite a 'Feb 2026 GCC bloc deal at 90 days' — this could not be verified against any official source, so it was disregarded; the confirmed figure is 180 days per Armenia's MFA and Wikipedia's visa-policy table. A separate scheme (Jan 2026–Jul 2027) exempts holders of a Gulf-issued RESIDENCE permit (mostly third-country expats living in the Gulf, not GCC citizens themselves) — not relevant to a Gulf passport holder travelling on their own citizenship.

🗓️Best time to visit

April–June and September–October are best overall (15–25°C, mild and dry). July–August is very hot in Yerevan (33–34°C highs), though the dry heat is more bearable than Gulf humidity — the highland towns of Dilijan, Tsaghkadzor and Jermuk are noticeably cooler and work as a genuine summer escape. December–February is cold and snowy, suiting skiing at Tsaghkadzor.

🕌 For the Muslim traveler

Halal food: The Muslim community is small (roughly 1,000-3,000, mostly Iranian and Kurdish) and declared halal concentrates in Yerevan alone — over a dozen declared restaurants (Shirvan Persian Halal, Mehak Indian, Zeituna) serving Persian, Middle Eastern and Indian food. Armenia has no central halal certification body, so certification is often via international bodies or reputation alone. Outside Yerevan, options are very scarce and limited to traditional Armenian fare (grilled meats usually pork-free, but without formal certification).

Prayer places: The Blue Mosque (Goy Mosque) on Mashtots Avenue in Yerevan is virtually the only landmark — an 18th-century Persian mosque with a peaceful garden, and Friday prayers are genuinely held there. Outside Yerevan there are effectively no mosques — carry a personal prayer mat and use an app for qibla direction.

🌙Ramadan & Eid

The small Muslim community gathers for iftar around the Blue Mosque in Yerevan, but broader Armenian public life is entirely unaffected by Ramadan — no change to work hours or restaurant schedules. Gulf visitors during Ramadan need to arrange their own iftar outside Yerevan.

🎭Culture tips

Armenian hospitality is warm and genuine — you may be invited to share food or taste local wine/brandy in small shops, and politely declining is entirely acceptable. Respect at monasteries (lowered voices, modest dress) is customary. Russian is more widespread than English among the older generation. Avoid political talk about Nagorno-Karabakh or Turkey with strangers — a very sensitive topic and a deep national wound.

💳Cards & payments

Cards (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted in Yerevan and major towns, and Apple Pay/Google Pay are common in modern shops. Cash is necessary in villages, at monasteries and on marshrutka minibuses. ATMs are abundant, and the dram's rate is stable.

📲Apps & internet

Yandex Go and GG Taxi for transit, Google Maps is accurate, and Idram/Telcell apps handle local payments. No blocking of standard Western apps (unlike some neighbouring countries).

🚗Driving there

Right-hand driving, and an International Driving Permit is required alongside a national licence. The alcohol limit is near-zero and strictly enforced. International agencies (Hertz, Avis, Sixt) and local firms operate at Zvartnots Airport. Mountain roads are generally good but need care in winter snow.

💵Tipping culture

Not obligatory but common in tourist restaurants (~10%); genuine appreciation for good service is warmly received.

📶SIM & eSIM

Viva-MTS, Team (formerly Beeline) and Ucom — instant tourist SIMs from operator stores (passport required for registration), and eSIM is available from all three. Coverage is good in towns, weaker in remote mountains.

🚇Getting around

Yerevan's metro (the only one in the South Caucasus) is cheap and simple but nearly a single line. Minibuses (marshrutka) link every town cheaply, and the Yerevan-Gyumri train is a comfortable option. Yandex Go and GG apps are cheap and reliable within Yerevan. Renting a car is very useful for monasteries and mountain villages off the marshrutka grid.

💰 Approximate cost

Among the Caucasus's cheapest destinations: a fast-food meal ~3,000 AMD (~$8), cappuccino ~1,200 AMD (~$3), a hostel bed ~$10, a mid-range hotel $50-100/night. The dram (~379 to the dollar in 2026) is relatively stable. Prices outside Yerevan run even cheaper.

🛡️ Safety

The main tourist circuit (Yerevan, Gyumri, Dilijan, Sevan, Tsaghkadzor, Goris town itself, Jermuk) is genuinely safe with very low street crime. The real caution: the former Nagorno-Karabakh region has been entirely off-limits to visitors since September 2023 (fully under Azerbaijani control), and any area near the Armenia-Azerbaijan border (especially Tavush in the east, Syunik east of Goris and south of Kapan, and Gegharkunik east of Vardenis) is officially a Level-4 do-not-travel zone due to landmines and potential military activity. Don't approach the border without an experienced local guide.

Blood-alcohol limit is effectively zero (a strict policy) with severe penalties for driving under influence. Drug penalties (even for small amounts) are harsh. Photography is banned near any military or border facility. No real religious restrictions on non-Christians, though modest dress is expected (not legally mandated) when visiting monasteries.

Good healthcare in Yerevan (modern private hospitals); serious cases outside the capital may need transfer there. Pharmacies are common and most medicines are available over-the-counter. No tropical health risks.

No direct flight from Riyadh currently (connects via Dubai or Doha, roughly 5 hours total); flydubai flies direct from Dubai (~3h15, 9 flights/week) and Qatar Airways begins direct Doha flights in June 2026 (~3h30).
