• The Japanese Garden inside Szczytnicki Park, a quiet retreat away from the center's buzz
• The romantic Tumski Bridge (love-lock bridge) over the Odra and an evening river boat cruise
• The winter Christmas Market, among Poland's prettiest and less crowded than Warsaw's
• Hala Targowa (Market Hall) for local produce and everyday city life away from the tourist trail

Families: near the Old Town square or Ostrów Tumski — everything is walkable; pick a street off the square's noisier corners. Couples: around Cathedral Island for quiet canal views, genuinely romantic. Tight budget: the up-and-coming Nadodrze district near the main train station — cheap and well connected, though plainer than the historic core.

There's no direct train or tram from the airport to the center — take bus 106 (day) or 206 (night), about 35–45 minutes, or a taxi app like Bolt/Uber/FreeNow for around 20 minutes; avoid unlicensed cabs touting at arrivals. Don't accept a rose from strangers near the main square — a common scam that demands large sums once you've taken it. Validate tram/bus tickets from the onboard machine immediately — fines for riding without one are steep. Book zoo tickets online to save time and money, and go early (opens 9am) to beat crowds and summer heat. The Christmas market is lovely but gets very crowded on weekends — visit on a weekday evening instead.
