📸Top activities & landmarks
- Air & Space and Natural History (free)
- The Mall and Lincoln Memorial at dusk
- The Capitol (booked tour) and Library of Congress
- Georgetown for strolling and dining
🏨Where to stay
Foggy Bottom or Dupont Circle — safe with direct metro to the Mall.
⚠️Tips & warnings
Museums are free but some now need free timed passes (Air & Space) — reserve online. Evenings wind down early, and some eastern districts don't suit night wandering.
📍 On the ground
Getting around: The WMATA Metro (6 lines) makes a car unnecessary in central DC, and contactless bank cards tap directly at the faregates. Reagan National (DCA) has its own Metro stop; Dulles (IAD) has had a direct Silver Line connection since 2022; BWI links via a free shuttle to MARC/Amtrak trains. Uber/Lyft operate 24/7.
Halal & prayer places: A strong presence. The Islamic Center of Washington (Embassy Row, 1957) is a landmark. Adams Morgan/Dupont Circle has 21+ halal restaurants per Zabihah, and halal food trucks serve the downtown federal core on weekdays. The wider DMV-area halal scene (including Northern Virginia) is described by local press as nationally trend-setting.
Local safety: The tourist core — the National Mall, Georgetown, Dupont Circle, and downtown — is well-patrolled and safe, and citywide violent crime fell sharply through 2025. The neighborhoods to avoid (Anacostia and parts of the far Southeast) are well away from any sight you'd visit.
Cost figures: 2026 prices: casual meal $8–15, mid-range $10–20 (upscale $40–65), Metro 1-day pass $15.50, Washington Monument is free (timed ticket), the Spy Museum uses dynamic pricing, roughly $25–40.
