Mid-April to June, or September to mid-November - mild weather, comfortable for walking the waterfront and old town, without peak summer heat (above 33C in July-August) or crowds. Winter (Dec-Feb) is cold and sometimes rainy but quiet and cheaper.

🏨Where to stay
Families: stay near Aristotelous Square or the waterfront for easy access to sights with a relatively calm base and nearby family restaurants. Couples: Ano Poli (Upper Town) offers a romantic, traditional-house atmosphere, though it means more walking and hills. Budget: the Vardaris/new railway station area is cheaper and near transit hubs. If quiet evenings matter, avoid booking directly inside Ladadika - it's a lively restaurant and nightlife lane.
⚠️Tips & warnings
Watch for people posing as plainclothes police asking to inspect your passport or wallet in crowded squares like Aristotelous or Tsimiski Street - a known scam; real police don't do street wallet checks. Use ride apps (Beat, Uber) rather than hailing a random street taxi, and confirm the meter is running once you're in. For Meteora's monasteries, modest dress is required - no trousers for women (wrap skirts are usually offered at the entrance) and no shorts for men. The city is generally calm and considered one of Greece's safer destinations, but normal caution with belongings in busy markets and transit still applies.

Getting around: Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) is about 13km from downtown. Bus 1X/01N reaches the center in ~40 minutes for about 8 SAR, or a fixed-rate taxi for about 103 SAR by day (more at night). The center itself is compact and very walkable. For longer trips or luggage, use ride apps like Beat or FreeNow rather than hailing a random street taxi. The metro is still under construction and not yet operating; local OASTH buses are a cheap way to reach outlying areas. Day trips to Meteora or Vergina are easiest via an organized tour, or by train/bus if you prefer going independently.
Halal & prayer places: Halal options are less widespread than in Athens but do exist, concentrated in specific areas thanks to the city's Ottoman and Turkish/Middle Eastern community. Best bets are around Patriarchou Grigoriou Street, Ladadika, and the Vardaris district near the old station, with Turkish and Middle Eastern spots (kebab houses, Anatolian and Syrian food) serving halal meat. Elsewhere, ask about certification or stick to seafood, vegetarian dishes, and pork-free Greek staples like salads, beans, and grilled vegetables. There's no permanent public prayer facility - the historic Yeni Mosque only opens for occasions like the two Eids - so daily prayer usually means your hotel room or an informal space.
