Full guideLast updated: 14/07/2026

🗓️Best time to visit

November–February exclusively — the desert summer here is a genuine 45°C+ danger and many trips halt entirely.

📸Top activities & landmarks

  • The volcanic Hoggar peaks (Assekrem)
  • Traditional Tuareg culture
  • Zero-light-pollution desert stargazing
  • Isolated desert oases

🏨Where to stay

Simple town lodges, desert tents during the Hoggar trip — the whole experience is about the desert, not the hotel.

⚠️Tips & warnings

Book exclusively through an officially licensed agency — this is Algeria's one region genuinely demanding serious security caution and precise advance planning.

📍 On the ground

Getting around: A domestic flight exclusively from the capital (~2.5h) — overland driving isn't practical or offered. Hoggar trips are organised in 4x4s through licensed agencies only.

Halal & prayer places: Total — a conservative Tuareg desert town, halal as a given.

Local safety: Same as country →

Cost figures: 2026 prices: a 3–5-day Hoggar trip with driver and meals ~$150–250 pp/day, the Tamanrasset museum ~$2.

⏱️How many days?

3-5 days

Suggested plan:

  1. Arrival and trip prep
  2. Hoggar and Assekrem days
  3. Return
