⚠️Tips & warnings
Head gestures traditionally invert (a shake can mean yes) — rely on words. Off the main streets pavements crumble and the vibe runs Soviet — this is a value experience, not a luxury one.
📍 On the ground
Getting around: Metro Line M4 (Yellow) runs directly from the airport into the center (Serdika) in 26–32 minutes on one ticket valid across the whole network. There's no Uber or Bolt ride-hailing in Bulgaria (both banned since 2015) — use local apps like Yellow or TaxiMe, which quote fares upfront just like Uber; a taxi from the airport to the center runs roughly €9–15. Walking covers most of the central sights.
Halal & prayer places: Banya Bashi Mosque (1576) is the only functioning mosque in the center, steps from the Central Market Hall and the Roman ruins of Serdica. Around it and along Maria Luiza Blvd sit genuine halal restaurants, mostly Syrian and Turkish-run (e.g. Ikram, Turquoise), serving grills, hummus and Middle Eastern dishes. The scene is small and geographically narrow compared to larger European capitals, but workable day-to-day for anyone staying near the center.

Cost figures: 2026 prices (in euros, after Bulgaria adopted the euro in January 2026): a casual meal (kebapche or grilled meat) €8–12, a mid-range central restaurant €15–25 per person, a single metro/bus ticket €0.80 (valid across all three metro lines), the National Historical Museum entry around €5 for adults.
