⚠️Tips & warnings
Book the Alcatraz ferry weeks ahead — it sells out fast. Bring layered clothing; weather shifts quickly between neighborhoods.
📍 On the ground
Getting around: No rental car needed in the tourist core — excellent walkability. Muni (bus/rail/cable car) and BART cover the city well, with a Clipper card as the easiest all-in-one payment. SFO connects directly via BART (~30 min, ~$10). Uber/Lyft (SF is Uber's home city) run $25–40 to downtown plus a $5.50 airport surcharge.
Halal & prayer places: The Islamic Society of San Francisco sits in the Tenderloin district, which also has a real halal cluster (Pakistani/Yemeni/Ethiopian spots). The larger, more established halal geography (Fremont, East San Jose) is in Bay Area suburbs, not SF proper — don't conflate the two.
Local safety: Avoid the Tenderloin/Civic Center area at night (open drug activity) — visit the mosque there by day. Car break-ins are real but have fallen sharply since 2022 — still don't leave valuables visible.
Cost figures: 2026 prices: casual meal $12–25, mid-range $25–60+ (among the most expensive US dining markets, some add a 4–6% health surcharge), single Muni ride $2.85, Alcatraz ferry $47.95 adult.
