🗓️Best time to visit

June-November is cooler and mistier (garúa) but best for plankton-rich marine wildlife viewing; December-May is warmer with clearer water for snorkeling.

📸Top activities & landmarks

  • The Charles Darwin Research Station and its giant tortoises
  • Tortuga Bay's sandy beach, reachable on foot
  • Las Grietas beach and its turquoise water
  • Snorkeling alongside sea lions and sea turtles
  • The nearby lava tunnels

🏨Where to stay

Small central Puerto Ayora near the harbor — the base for all tours and boats heading to other islands.

⚠️Tips & warnings

Book the national park fee and any multi-island trips well ahead of travel — daily boat seats are limited in peak season.

📍 On the ground

Getting around: A domestic flight from Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra Airport, then a shuttle bus (~$5), a small ferry (~$1) and another bus (~$5) or taxi (~$20) to reach town. Private cars aren't really driven on the island.

Halal & prayer places: Nearly nonexistent — an isolated tourist island with no Muslim community; rely entirely on fresh fish and seafood.

Local safety: Among Ecuador's calmest destinations security-wise — a tightly monitored eco-tourism economy makes the island very safe to walk even in the evening, with only ordinary caution around wildlife (don't touch or approach sea lions and marine iguanas closer than the permitted distance).

Cost figures: 2026 prices: a mandatory $200 cash national park fee plus a $20 cash transit control card (paid on arrival), a day boat tour to another island ~$90-150, a local fish meal $8-15, hotels $40-150/night.

⏱️How many days?

3-5 days

Suggested plan:

  1. The Darwin Station + Tortuga Bay
  2. A boat tour to another island
  3. Snorkeling with sea lions
