🗓️Best time to visit

April–June and September–November; December charms coldly, August is nastily humid.

📸Top activities & landmarks

  • Central Park and the Met
  • Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (free Staten ferry for the view alone)
  • Top of the Rock or Summit for the skyline
  • Brooklyn Bridge on foot at sunset
  • Broadway (TKTS for half-price)

🏨Where to stay

Midtown for first-timers (everything walks or subways); rooms shock small for the money — USD 300 buys no space here.

⚠️Tips & warnings

Budget honestly at double your guess: an ordinary meal runs USD 25–40 before tax and the customary 18–20% tip. The subway beats any car by day. Halal thrives (street carts and restaurants everywhere).

📍 On the ground

Getting around: The subway runs 24h and your contactless card pays directly (OMNY, auto weekly cap). Yellow cabs and Uber/Lyft price similarly. Walking beats driving in midtown by day — literally.

Halal & prayer places: Among the West's easiest: halal carts on every midtown corner (the original Halal Guys at 53rd/6th), with dense restaurant rows in Jackson Heights and Brooklyn — everyone knows the word halal.

Local safety: Manhattan's tourist core is generally safe day and night, but stay alert to pickpocketing on crowded subways and in Times Square, where costumed characters and CD/'gift' sellers press tourists for money — you owe nothing. Keep to well-used subway cars late at night.

Cost figures: Approx. 2026 prices: subway ride ~USD 2.90, Top of the Rock ~USD 40, the Met ~USD 30, pizza slice USD 3–5, mid-range meal USD 25–50 per person before tax and tip (~28% on top).
