🗓️Best time to visit

October–March, strictly; April–June is a furnace (45°C+) and November can bring choking smog — watch the AQI.

📸Top activities & landmarks

  • Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk (by rickshaw)
  • Red Fort and Humayun's Tomb
  • Qutub Minar
  • Lotus Temple and Akshardham
  • Agra and a dawn Taj Mahal (Gatimaan train day trip)

🏨Where to stay

Connaught Place or Aerocity by the airport — reliable and air-conditioned; skip cheap bazaar hotels on a first visit.

⚠️Tips & warnings

Tourist rule one: airport/station 'helpful taxis' are usually scams — Uber/Ola only. Bottled water only, no salads outside hotels the first days. Halving the first price is normal bargaining. Halal abounds around Jama Masjid and Nizamuddin.

📍 On the ground

Getting around: The modern metro is the cleanest, fastest way (first car women-only) on a smart card; Uber/Ola for the rest — never street taxis or 'helpers'. Rickshaws by pre-agreed price or in-app.

Halal & prayer places: Old Delhi's heart is halal: around Jama Masjid and Matia Mahal lane (legendary kebab and biryani), plus Nizamuddin — in New Delhi and the malls ask first; vegetarian restaurants are the always-safe fallback.

Local safety: Delhi has three distinct concerns beyond the national level. Severe winter air pollution (Nov–Dec AQI regularly 'hazardous' above 400, with zero clean-air days recorded in 2025) — mask up and limit outdoor time. Organized tourist scams around New Delhi Railway Station, Paharganj and Connaught Place (fake 'government tourist offices' and non-existent 'tourist-quota' train tickets — the only official office is at 88 Janpath, tickets via IRCTC). And it ranks India's least-safe major metro for women (NARI 2025), so take extra care after dark and on transport.

Cost figures: Approx. 2026 prices: metro INR 10–60, Qutub Minar ~INR 600 (foreigners), Humayun's Tomb ~INR 600, Taj Mahal ~INR 1,300 + Gatimaan train ~INR 1,500 return, mid-range meal INR 300–800 per person.
