Nessebar
An ancient peninsula town, World Heritage-listed, and the gateway to the Sunny Beach resort strip
A city of Bulgaria
🗓️Best time to visit
June–September for warm beach weather (25–30°C); May and October are far quieter and cheaper for those prioritising history over swimming.
📸Top activities & landmarks
- The peninsula Old Town (World Heritage)
- Nessebar's ancient Byzantine churches
- The iconic windmill at the causeway entrance
- Neighbouring Sunny Beach (Bulgaria's longest beach)
- The ancient Thracian fortress-wall ruins
🏨Where to stay
Staying inside the Old Town is quieter and historic; neighbouring Sunny Beach suits those wanting the beach and a livelier nightlife.
⚠️Tips & warnings
Visit the Old Town early morning before the day-tripper crowds arrive from Sunny Beach and tour buses. Don't expect a halal food scene here — plan meals ahead if that's a priority.
📍 On the ground
Getting around: The old town itself is entirely walkable (cars are banned or heavily restricted on the peninsula). Burgas Airport is the nearest, ~25–30km away (private taxi ~25–30 min; the M-Bus is cheaper but ~50 min). Sunny Beach is a 15-minute walk or a very short taxi ride.
Halal & prayer places: Honestly very thin — no mosques and no formally declared halal restaurants in either Nessebar or neighbouring Sunny Beach. Scattered Turkish restaurants may serve pork-free kebabs and grills on direct request, but there's no certified halal standard. Travellers wanting reliable halal are better served basing themselves in Varna or Sofia and visiting as a day trip.
Local safety: Same as country →
Cost figures: 2026 prices: entry to most Old Town churches is free or a token ~€2, a seafront fish meal €12–20, a taxi from Burgas Airport ~€25–35, the M-Bus from the airport ~€2–3.
⏱️How many days?
