🏨Where to stay
Simple, reliable hotels along the Nile waterfront — Nile views are priceless. Avoid hotels far from the tourist zone.
⚠️Tips & warnings
Book a reliable day driver to cover both banks — quality varies widely. Start with Karnak (the grandest), then Luxor Temple, then the West Bank. Summer heat is intense — drink water constantly.
📍 On the ground
Getting around: No metro or regular buses — taxis lack meters (negotiate beforehand: in-city trip EGP 50–80, Nile crossing ~EGP 100), or hire a day driver (EGP 150–250). Public ferries cross the Nile for a nominal fee (~EGP 2) — the cheapest option for solo travelers. Uber/Careem not available; local apps may work. Luxor airport is a short distance away — airport taxi ~EGP 50–80.
Halal & prayer places: Halal is default — as everywhere in Egypt. Most tourist and local restaurants are halal. Abu El Haggag Mosque sits inside Luxor Temple itself (a unique historical anomaly); other mosques scattered in the old bazaar and residential areas.
Local safety: Very safe — Luxor is a friendly tourist city. Tourist zones are safe at night. Crowded sidewalks can attract pickpockets — just stay alert.
Cost figures: 2026 prices: short taxi EGP 50–80, full-day driver EGP 150–250, public ferry EGP 2, casual local meal EGP 40–80, mid-range restaurant EGP 200–350, Karnak Temple entry ~EGP 50, Valley of the Kings ~EGP 50.
