Leuven
A historic university town (Belgium's oldest university), a short hop from Brussels
A city of Belgium
🗓️Best time to visit
May–September is best, when Grote Markt fills with student life and outdoor terraces; university holiday periods (summer) are quieter but less lively.
📸Top activities & landmarks
- Grote Markt and the Gothic town hall
- The historic University Library and its tower
- The Groot Begijnhof (UNESCO World Heritage)
- The Stella Artois brewery (an industrial-heritage visit)
🏨Where to stay
An overnight usually isn't needed — it's an ideal day trip from Brussels; those preferring to stay find options near Grote Markt.
⚠️Tips & warnings
Halal is genuinely limited here — if halal meals are a priority, plan a single day and eat before or after in Brussels.
📍 On the ground
Getting around: A direct train from Brussels takes about 20-25 minutes at high frequency. The centre is small, flat, and entirely walkable; De Lijn buses (lines 3, 4 and others) reach the outskirts for a ~€3 ticket.
Halal & prayer places: Limited within the city itself — no mosque sits within Leuven's limits (the nearest is in Zaventem), though the KU Leuven student group IMSAL runs a prayer space and activities, and university buildings have prayer rooms. Few declared halal restaurants (Habibi, Palestinian, among a small handful); halal butchers exist. Honestly: easier as a day trip than for halal-dependent longer stays.
Local safety: Same as country →
Cost figures: 2026 prices: a Brussels-Leuven train ticket ~€5-8 (one way, 2nd class), a Stella Artois brewery tour ~€20 (Saturdays and Sundays only), a casual meal €10-15.
