🏨Where to stay
Families: the Waterfront area near Sutera Harbour/Jesselton, with hotels offering pools, beach access, and proximity to the jetty. Couples: boutique hotels around Gaya Street and downtown, close to restaurants and sunset spots. Budget travelers: guesthouses near Gaya Street and Australia Place, affordable and walkable to everything.
⚠️Tips & warnings
Use Grab instead of hailing random street taxis — pricing is fixed upfront, while some airport and tourist-zone taxis "forget" to run the meter. Watch out for "today-only" tour touts outside Jesselton Point jetty and the Waterfront; book only through officially licensed operators. Box jellyfish are active March–June around the islands, so swim only where watched and follow boat-crew instructions. The Floating Mosque is closed to non-Muslim visitors on Fridays and has set visiting windows between prayer times. Kinabalu Park sits at 1,500m and stays cool, so pack a light warm layer even in summer. The Filipino Market and Gaya Street get crowded — stay alert for pickpocketing and motorcycle bag-snatching.

Getting around: Kota Kinabalu International Airport is 10-15 minutes from downtown — use Grab or the official taxi counter inside arrivals (fixed-fare ticket issued upfront). Most downtown sights are walkable, and Grab is the easiest way to move between hotels and the jetty. Boats to the islands depart from Jesselton Point. For out-of-town trips (Kinabalu Park, Poring), book an organized tour or hire a car with driver.
Halal & prayer places: Halal food is easy to find — most Malay-run eateries are halal by default, with certified options at major restaurants and hotels. Best halal food areas: Gaya Street, the Waterfront, and food courts like Sinsuran and Grace Point. The Floating Mosque and Sabah State Mosque are the key landmarks; prayer rooms are available in most malls and at the airport.
