Killarney

Mid-June through end of September gives the best weather and longest daylight. September specifically balances good weather with much lighter crowds than the July-August peak. Western Ireland's weather shifts fast, so pack a rain layer even on a clear morning.

• Killarney National Park's three lakes and ancient woodland (entirely free entry)
• Ross Castle, a 15th-century lakeside fortress

• A traditional jaunting car (horse-cart) tour through the park with a local jarvey

Families: the Muckross Road area, right by the national park entrance, with private parking and a quieter feel than downtown. Couples/lively atmosphere: Town Centre, everything walkable but most hotels lack private parking. Budget: guesthouses/B&Bs on the town's edges offer good value.

Killarney town itself is easily walkable; you only need a car or tour to reach the Ring of Kerry or Gap of Dunloe. Tour buses on the Ring of Kerry always run counterclockwise — if self-driving, go clockwise to avoid meeting bus convoys on narrow roads, or start very early morning. The Ring of Kerry can't comfortably be done without your own transport, so book a rental car or day tour ahead. Muckross and Torc Waterfall get bus-crowd heavy in peak summer; visit early morning for a calmer experience. Weekends draw stag/hen parties and a livelier pub scene — families wanting quiet may prefer avoiding the town centre at night on weekends. Killarney National Park itself is entirely free; fees apply only to Muckross House, jaunting cars, and boat tours.

Suggested plan:

1. Day 1: Arrive in Killarney, walk or jaunting-car tour through Killarney National Park, visit Muckross House and gardens and Torc Waterfall, quiet evening in town.
2. Day 2: Full day on the Ring of Kerry by rental car (or organized tour), stopping at Kenmare, Caragh Lake, and coastal viewpoints.
3. Day 3: Ross Castle and a boat tour on Lough Leane, then the Gap of Dunloe on foot or by bike before departing.
