Hulhumalé

November–April is the favored dry season — clear skies, calm seas, good snorkel visibility — but it's also peak pricing for rooms and boat trips. May–October brings scattered showers and short squalls between sunny spells, with noticeably lower prices — a solid pick if budget matters more than guaranteed sun.

• Central Park in the island's heart — shaded walking paths and open lawns

• A skate park and the feel of a modern, planned island city

Families: kitchen-equipped serviced apartments in the island's centre near Central Park — very practical for stays over 3 nights and saves on eating out. Couples/mid-budget: small family-run guesthouses near the east beach, from around SAR 150/night. Pure convenience before a resort transfer by seaplane or boat: mid-range beachfront hotels with breakfast or half-board.

The island is officially "dry" — alcohol is banned everywhere local except the licensed Hulhulé Island Hotel at the bridge's airport end and a few floating lagoon bars; both are easy to skip for a fully family atmosphere. Dress: outside the designated tourist bikini stretch, modest dress is expected (t-shirt and long shorts, or a burkini for women) — confirm where that zone starts before heading down. Snorkeling straight off the beach is often disappointing (thin marine life, and water quality near some hotels can be an issue) — book a proper boat tour to reach real reefs instead. Don't confuse "Hulhumalé" (the residential island) with "Hulhulé" (the airport island itself) — the near-identical names trip up taxi and hotel bookings. Seaplanes to far-flung resorts fly daylight-only, so plan a first or last night here around that.

1. Day 1: arrive and settle in, sunset walk on the beach, dinner at a local restaurant
2. Day 2: morning at Central Park and the Sheikh Qasim Mosque, afternoon snorkel or sandbank/dolphin boat tour
3. Day 3 (optional): extra water sport (jet ski/kayak) or a short trip to Malé via the bridge or ferry, last-minute shopping before the airport
