🗓️Best time to visit

October to April is ideal with mild, pleasant weather. Avoid summer (June-September): heat tops 35°C with humidity heavier than Jeddah's, and hurricane season (June-November) means checking weather alerts before travel

📸Top activities & landmarks

  • Space Center Houston - NASA's official visitor complex with a tram tour into the real Johnson Space Center
  • Houston Museum of Natural Science and the adjacent botanical gardens
  • Museum District - dozens of museums clustered together, anchored by the Museum of Fine Arts
  • Hermann Park - large green space, family-friendly
  • Discovery Green - downtown park with events and activities for families
  • Mahatma Gandhi District (Hillcroft) - Houston's densest cluster of halal restaurants and Middle Eastern/South Asian shops
  • Galveston - a day-trip to the Gulf of Mexico beach and Pleasure Pier boardwalk
  • National Museum of Funeral History - quirky and consistently recommended by visitors

🏨Where to stay

Families: the Galleria area - malls and family hotels close to everything, or near the Texas Medical Center for medical trips (hotels there often have Arabic-speaking staff for international patients). Couples: Downtown or Midtown, near restaurants and a quieter evening scene. Budget: chain hotels off the highways outside the core - plan on a rental car

⚠️Tips & warnings

Houston is entirely car-dependent - don't expect to walk between attractions like in a European city. Public transit (bus/light rail) is limited and mainly useful downtown and in the Museum District. Summer humidity is draining, so plan outdoor activities for morning or evening. Hurricane season (June-November) can disrupt travel - watch alerts. If visiting for medical care, book hospital appointments well ahead since Gulf patient demand is high

📍 On the ground

Getting around: George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) has direct flights from Riyadh and Jeddah plus other Gulf routes, and sits closer to downtown and the Medical Center than Hobby Airport (HOU), which is mostly domestic. Renting a car is strongly recommended - the city is sprawling and highway-dependent. Uber/Lyft are widely available for shorter trips or if you'd rather not drive. METRO bus and light rail only meaningfully serve downtown and the Museum District

Halal & prayer places: One of the best US cities for halal food, thanks to a large Arab, South Asian, and broader Muslim community. The Mahatma Gandhi District (Hillcroft) is the go-to area with dozens of halal restaurants (Middle Eastern, South Asian, Afghan) and halal grocers. Several mosques are easily accessible around the city, and halal options are also scattered near the Medical Center and the Galleria

Local safety: Same as country →

Cost figures: Mid-range meal per person: 60-95 SAR. Uber/Lyft ride within the city: 40-90 SAR depending on distance (the city is large). Space Center ticket: roughly 95-115 SAR for an adult (cheaper booked online), plus about 38 SAR parking. Mid-range hotel per night: 550-850 SAR. Rental car per day: roughly 150-280 SAR before insurance

⏱️How many days?

3-4 days

Suggested plan:

  1. Day 1: Space Center Houston with the tram tour - allow at least half a day
  2. Day 2: Museum District in the morning (Natural Science or Fine Arts), Hermann Park after, halal dinner in Hillcroft in the evening
  3. Day 3: Day trip to Galveston - beach and Pleasure Pier boardwalk
  4. Day 4 (optional): Galleria for shopping, Discovery Green and downtown, buffer time for rest or medical appointments
