Heidelberg
A romantic riverside city — an ancient university, castle ruins, lovers, and poets
A city of Germany
🗓️Best time to visit
May–June and autumn (September–October) for beautiful weather and fewer peak-season crowds.
📸Top activities & landmarks
- Heidelberg Castle ruins and the funicular to the hilltop
- The Old Bridge (Alte Brücke) — river and castle views
- The historic university (Ruprecht Karl University) — Germany's oldest university
- Hauptstraße — historic street with shops, taverns, and restaurants
- Philosopher's Walk (Philosophenweg) — a hillside trail with river views
🏨Where to stay
The east bank (Altstadt) and Old Bridge area is the best base — romantic and close to everything. Prices are reasonable and the atmosphere intimate.
⚠️Tips & warnings
The Old Bridge at sunset is magical — ride the funicular an hour before sunset for the final light. The city is tiny — you can explore the core easily in a single day.
📍 On the ground
Getting around: The tram and bus network (RNV) is small and compact; a single zone ticket costs €2.60 (2026), day ticket €6.70. The historic center walks entirely on foot — no car needed. From Frankfurt Airport: train connection to Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof in roughly 90 minutes for €30–50.
Halal & prayer places: Present but modest — several verified halal restaurants (Akam's, AlsaFi, Mahmoud's, and others) and a local mosque. The halal menu is shorter than larger western cities but sufficient for a short stay.
Local safety: Same as country →
Cost figures: 2026 prices: casual meal €10–15, mid-range restaurant €18–30, single tram ticket €2.60, Heidelberg Castle admission €9 (includes the funicular to the ruins).
