🏨Where to stay

The West Lake area for the view (priciest); cheaper options near Wulin district or Qingzhen Street for halal proximity.

⚠️Tips & warnings

Halal is real but sits away from the lake — plan a meal near Phoenix Mosque or Qingzhen Street rather than expecting a lakeside option. The city works as a single day trip from Shanghai (1hr train) or as a fuller two-night stay.

📍 On the ground

Getting around: A high-speed train from Shanghai takes just one hour (¥73, roughly 300 daily departures), and Metro Line 19 links Xiaoshan Airport directly to both Hangzhou East and West stations. West Lake's east bank is reached via Metro Line 1 or 2 (Longxiangqiao or Fengqilu stations).

Halal & prayer places: Phoenix Mosque on Zhongshan Road is one of China's oldest and the historic anchor; Hangzhou Mosque in Gongshu district (built in the 1980s) and a larger modern mosque in Jianggan district serve the city too. The small Qingzhen ('Muslim') Street holds halal butchers, grocers and restaurants. Around West Lake itself halal is nearly absent — the mosque area is the real destination for a meal.

Local safety: The 'tea house' scam operates around West Lake: friendly invitations to a traditional tea ceremony end in a steep bill. Enjoy the lake and ignore such sudden invitations.

Cost figures: 2026 prices: Shanghai–Hangzhou train ¥73/1 hour, West Lake-area hotels average $204/night (priciest), with February the cheapest month averaging $72. Walking West Lake's shore is free; boat rides add a modest fee.
