March-May and September-November: mild weather, clear skies, calm seas for reliable boat trips. September-October is the sweet spot (crisp air, deep blue skies). Avoid July-August when possible - peak monsoon and storm season, with real risk of cruise cancellations, though it's also the cheapest, least crowded window.

• Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave) - the bay's largest and most-visited cave with vast chambers and dramatic formations
• Ti Top Island - crescent sandy beach with a stairway climb to a famous panoramic viewpoint
• Kayaking or bamboo-boat paddling through floating fishing villages and narrow karst passages
• Lan Ha Bay (via Cat Ba Island) - quieter, less crowded, cleaner-water alternative to the main bay
• Sun World Ha Long Complex - cable car (Queen Cable Car) up to the city's best viewpoint plus a family amusement park
• An overnight stay aboard a traditional junk boat anchored among the karsts - the signature experience
• Bai Tu Long Bay - a calmer, far less touristed extension of the main bay

Families: family-friendly overnight cruise boats with sea-view cabins, or Bai Chay beachfront hotels with pools. Couples: boutique cruises with private balconies, or quiet Tuan Chau Island resorts. Budget: economy hotels in Ha Long City/Bai Chay paired with a day-boat tour instead of an overnight cruise to cut costs.

Book your cruise only through a verified agent or directly with a known operator who gives you the boat's name and license number upfront - unregistered "travel agencies" in Hanoi's Old Quarter selling cheap, unnamed cruises are the most consistently reported trap. Avoid sites that ask for extra fees after booking, claiming the boat is full. The bay can feel crowded with boats in peak season; if calm water and quieter views matter more than headline fame, consider Lan Ha Bay instead. Weekday sailings (Tue-Thu) are cheaper and less crowded than weekends. There's no mosque in Ha Long itself, so bring a travel prayer mat, confirm the qibla direction in advance, and ask your cruise/hotel to arrange halal meals and prayer time when booking.

1. Day 1: Depart Hanoi by limousine bus (2.5-3 hrs), board the cruise boat, lunch aboard, visit Sung Sot Cave, kayak or bamboo-boat through a floating village, sunset and overnight on the boat
2. Day 2: Sunrise deck exercises, climb Ti Top Island and relax on its beach, cruise toward Lan Ha Bay or Cat Ba Island, disembark in the afternoon, head to Sun World Ha Long Complex for the cable car at sunset
3. Day 3 (optional): Day trip to the quieter Bai Tu Long Bay, or free time in Bai Chay for shopping before heading back to Hanoi in the evening
