⚠️Tips & warnings
The difference from Berat: Gjirokastër is smaller and keeps its original character with far less tourist polish — worth visiting alongside Berat on the same trip if possible.
📍 On the ground
Getting around: Furgons and buses from Tirana run roughly hourly in the morning (1,000 lek/~€10, ~3.25 hours), and it's much closer from Saranda (just ~1 hour). The old town and castle are entirely walkable, but the climb up cobbled stone lanes is steep — comfortable shoes are essential.
Halal & prayer places: Follows the Berat/Shkodra pattern — qebaptore grills, grilled lamb and fish are the safe halal default. The Bazaar Mosque (also known as Memi Bey Mosque, 1757) in the heart of the old Ottoman bazaar is open daily and free to enter, more a historic landmark than a service hub for Muslim visitors.

Cost figures: 2026 prices: a furgon from Tirana 1,000 lek (~€10), a furgon from Saranda ~500 lek, Gjirokastër Castle + museum entry ~400 lek, a meal at an Old Bazaar restaurant €8–15.
