Funchal (Madeira)

April-October is best overall — mild, sunny, low rainfall. July-August are driest and warmest but busiest and priciest. May brings the citywide Flower Festival. Winter (Nov-Mar) is mild but rainier and quieter. Avoid planning around New Year's Eve unless booking a year ahead — Funchal's fireworks show is world-famous and hotels sell out completely.

Families: the Lido district on the waterfront — flatter streets and larger resort-style hotels with pools. Couples: the Old Town (Zona Velha) for atmosphere, or clifftop hotels west of it for dramatic bay views. Budget travelers: guesthouses and apartments in the city center away from the seafront, still walkable to most sights at lower prices.

Insist on metered taxis or use the Bolt app (Uber doesn't operate on the island) to avoid overcharging. If exploring beyond Funchal (levada trails, Pico do Arieiro), rent a car with decent power for the winding mountain roads. The Workers' Market and the traditional toboggan ride are known for tourist-inflated pricing — confirm the price clearly before buying or boarding, and watch for photo-upsell attempts afterward. Funchal's airport is partly built on stilts over the sea, so landings can feel bumpy in wind — normal, not a safety concern. Old Town streets are steep and cobbled, so wear comfortable shoes. Never swim near volcanic rocks or "natural pools" without checking sea conditions — waves have swept visitors off rocks while taking photos; use the designated Lido pools instead. The Old Town turns bar-heavy at night, so visiting by day suits families best.

Suggested plan:

1. Day 1: Explore the Old Town (Zona Velha), Rua de Santa Maria, the Workers' Market, and Funchal Cathedral, ending with an evening seafront stroll.
2. Day 2: Ride the Monte cable car up to Monte Palace Tropical Garden, wander the Botanical Gardens, then try the traditional toboggan ride down (optional) before heading back.
3. Day 3: Day trip to Pico do Arieiro or a levada trail outside the city, then visit the CR7 Museum back in central Funchal in the evening.
