🗓️Best time to visit
November–April for passable roads and slightly milder heat in the inherently hot Petén jungle.
📸Top activities & landmarks
- The Tikal Mayan pyramids amid the jungle (UNESCO site)
- The sunrise tour above Tikal's pyramids
- Colourful Flores island in the middle of the lake
- Lake Petén Itzá
🏨Where to stay
Flores island itself — small, safe and fully walkable, a better base than jungle-adjacent lodges near Tikal.
⚠️Tips & warnings
Book the sunrise tour days in advance — daily entry is capped and requires a licensed guide to enter before official opening.
📍 On the ground
Getting around: A domestic flight from the capital (~50 minutes, TAG) or a long overnight bus (8–10 hours). Tikal itself is 1–1.5 hours by taxi or shuttle from Flores.
Halal & prayer places: Non-existent — the furthest point from any halal infrastructure in the country; plan with prepared meals and strictly vegetarian options for jungle days.
Local safety: Same as country →
Cost figures: 2026 prices: Tikal entrance ~$24 (250 GTQ for the sunrise tour), a domestic flight to the capital ~$80–120, a Flores island hotel $25–60/night.
