🗓️Best time to visit

June and mid-September for a warm beach without peak crowds; July–August get very busy as Tirana's nearest beach getaway.

📸Top activities & landmarks

  • The Balkans' largest Roman amphitheatre (built 100 AD)
  • The Byzantine-Ottoman Durrës Castle
  • The lively 10km beachfront promenade
  • The Great Mosque
  • The main port and its Italian ferry links

🏨Where to stay

Seafront hotels are practical for a family wanting the beach close to Tirana without the long trip south to the Riviera.

⚠️Tips & warnings

Visit the Roman amphitheatre early morning to avoid heat and crowds — it's still being partly excavated.

📍 On the ground

Getting around: A very cheap bus from Tirana (~45 min, only ~100–150 lek), plus a slower train option. The bus station sits right next to the train station and the port, making transfers to/from Tirana or onward international ferries very easy. The center, the Roman amphitheatre, and the seafront are all walkable.

Halal & prayer places: Fair — the Great Mosque (built 1931 under King Zog I on an earlier Ottoman site) is active in the center, and qebaptore grills plus fish restaurants along the 10km seafront offer safe halal options. Religious life suffered a forced break under communism, so some religious sites are more historic markers than densely active hubs.

Cost figures: 2026 prices: bus from Tirana ~100–150 lek (under €1.5), Roman amphitheatre entry ~200 lek, a seafront fish meal €8–15, a beachfront hotel room €30–60/night.
