🗓️Best time to visit
May–September, the dry season, is best for touring and the Inca Trail; December–March is rainy, and the trail typically closes entirely in February for maintenance.
📸Top activities & landmarks
- The Plaza de Armas and Cusco Cathedral
- The Inca fortress of Sacsayhuamán
- Twelve-Angled Stone street (Hatun Rumiyoc)
- The traditional San Pedro market
- The gateway to the Sacred Valley of the Urubamba
🏨Where to stay
The historic town centre is the best tourist base; pick a hotel with supplemental oxygen if sensitive to altitude.
⚠️Tips & warnings
Allow a full day to acclimatise to the altitude before any physical exertion — local coca-leaf tea (mate de coca) eases symptoms and is legal and available everywhere.
📍 On the ground
Getting around: A domestic flight from Lima (~1.5h) is essential — no practical road route exists. The old town walks entirely, but the altitude (3,400m) slows movement for the first day or two.
Halal & prayer places: Near non-existent — no mosque or declared halal restaurant; relying on vegetables, Peru's famously diverse potatoes (over 3,000 varieties) and fish is relatively safe.
Local safety: Same as country →
Cost figures: 2026 prices: the unified tourist ticket (Boleto Turístico) for sites ~$22, a 3-star hotel $45–90/night, altitude-sickness tablets available from any local pharmacy.
⏱️How many days?
