Families: base in the old town near Piața Unirii for walkable access to everything, though it can get noisy at night; Între Lacuri is a quieter alternative close to Iulius Mall. Couples: boutique guesthouses inside the old town itself feel romantic and central. Budget travelers: the area near the train station (Gara) is cheaper and well connected, if less charming than the center.

Cluj is a student city with an active nightlife scene, especially around Piața Muzeului in the evenings - enjoy that area by day and skip the bar-hopping crowd if traveling with family. The 'haunted' Hoia Baciu forest is heavily oversold to tourists; skip it without regret if it's not your interest. Book hotels well ahead if visiting during the Untold or Electric Castle festivals (July-August), when prices spike and rooms sell out. Bolt and Uber are reliable and cheaper than street taxis. Carry some Romanian lei (RON) cash for parking and small vendors even though cards are widely accepted. Stray dogs are common throughout Romania's streets - stay calm and avoid approaching them directly.
