April–June and September–October bring mild temperatures (15–22°C) and fewer crowds — the best balance for sightseeing. July–August are warmer but busier, and Bilbao's biggest festival, Aste Nagusia (Semana Grande, 22–30 August 2026), turns the Casco Viejo old town into a nine-day street party with heavy public drinking and fireworks — plan around it if traveling with children. Winters are mild but notoriously rainy ("Basque grey"), so pack a rain jacket year-round.

Abando/Ensanche (around Gran Vía and the Guggenheim) is the easiest first-time base — central, walkable, and close to the main Abando train station, with the widest hotel range. Indautxu offers a quieter, more residential and modern feel near San Mamés stadium, good for families wanting distance from nightlife. Casco Viejo puts you inside the historic pintxos scene but gets loud with bar-hopping crowds into the night, especially during Aste Nagusia — less ideal if you need early, quiet nights with kids. Deusto, across the river near the university, is a calmer, good-value option a short tram ride from the center.

Buy a Barik card (€3, reloadable) for metro, tram, bus, and Bizkaibus — it makes every fare cheaper than paying cash. Rain gear is essential even in summer; Bilbao is one of Spain's wettest cities. Guggenheim is closed most Mondays (check the museum's calendar for seasonal exceptions) — plan other days for it. Halal food is limited and concentrated outside the main tourist center, so check Zabihah/HalalTrip listings and eat before heading out for a full day of sightseeing. The city's pintxos bar culture revolves heavily around alcohol and pork products (jamón, chorizo) — ask staff which pintxos are pork-free rather than assuming, and expect very few alcohol-free bars in Casco Viejo. If visiting during Aste Nagusia (22–30 August 2026), expect all-hours street drinking and crowds in the Old Quarter; families may prefer to base in Abando or Indautxu and visit the festival by day.

1. Day 1: Arrive, settle into Abando/Ensanche, walk the riverside promenade to the Guggenheim Museum, browse Gran Vía, evening stroll across the Zubizuri Bridge.
2. Day 2: Explore Casco Viejo's Siete Calles by day, visit Mercado de la Ribera, take the Funicular de Artxanda for panoramic views, dinner at a halal-friendly spot near San Francisco street.
3. Day 3 (optional): Day trip to a nearby Basque coastal town (e.g., Getxo or toward San Sebastián) or a relaxed second look at Bilbao's museums before departure.
