April-June and September-October bring mild weather and lighter crowds than peak summer, with clear mountain views. July-August is warm but busier and pricier; December suits Christmas-market visits despite the cold.

Skip swimming or floating the Aare unless with an experienced local - the current is far stronger than it looks, and accidents involving confident foreign swimmers are a recurring warning; wade safely instead at the Marzili or Lorraine river pools. Most shops close on Sundays, so plan Old Town walks or museums that day rather than shopping. Any hotel stay, even one night, earns you the free Bern Ticket covering trams, buses, and the Gurten/Marzili funiculars. Old Town streets are cobbled under the arcades, so wear comfortable shoes; strollers can struggle on some stretches. Keep bags close at the main station and around the Zytglogge during busy hours - opportunistic pickpocketing, not organized scams, is the real risk.
