Berat
The "city of a thousand and one windows" — tiered white Ottoman houses above the Osum river, one of Albania's two UNESCO towns
A city of Albania
🗓️Best time to visit
April–June and September–October are ideal (warm and pleasant); July–August is hot inland, often above 35°C — best avoided.
📸Top activities & landmarks
- Inhabited Berat Castle, dating to the 13th century
- The tiered windows of the Mangalem quarter
- The Ottoman Gorica bridge at sunset
- The Onufri Museum of Byzantine icons
- The quiet Christian quarter of Gorica
🏨Where to stay
Traditional guesthouses inside restored Ottoman houses in Mangalem or Gorica are the authentic pick — ask for a room with a castle view.
⚠️Tips & warnings
Cross the Gorica bridge right at sunset — the moment Mangalem's windows turn gold is the town's single best view.
📍 On the ground
Getting around: Regular buses from Tirana's North/South terminal roughly hourly (500 lek/~€5, a 2–2.5 hour ride, first departure 6:10am). No car is needed within the town itself — the three quarters (Kala, Mangalem, Gorica) are all walkable, linked by the Ottoman-era Gorica bridge on foot.
Halal & prayer places: More limited than Tirana but present — Turkish-style qebaptore grills and traditional Albanian riverfront restaurants along the Osum offer grilled lamb and qofte as an intuitively safe halal default. The Bachelors' Mosque (1827) and the King's Mosque (early 16th c.) in the old town are more historic landmarks than active visitor worship hubs.
