🗓️Best time to visit
April–May (tulips!) and June–September; book everything early — the city is permanently full.
📸Top activities & landmarks
- A canal boat tour — the best first read of the city
- Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh (timed tickets)
- The Jordaan and Albert Cuyp market
- Vondelpark by bike
- Day trip: Zaanse Schans windmills or Giethoorn
🏨Where to stay
The Museum Quarter and Oud-Zuid suit Gulf families best — calm and elegant; never around the station or the red-light district. Jordaan canals are the charming pick.
⚠️Tips & warnings
Full honesty: the center includes the red-light district and street-smelling coffeeshops — route and lodge to avoid them with kids, which is entirely doable. Bike lanes endanger pedestrians more than cars: never walk in them. Hotels are among Europe's priciest with a steep city tax.
📍 On the ground
Getting around: Your contactless card pays trams and metro directly (OVpay — tap in AND out). Trams cover everything that matters; canal boats are scenic transit. Bikes delight the practiced — and injure the not.
Halal & prayer places: Easy halal thanks to Turkish and Moroccan communities: real density in De Pijp and along Kinkerstraat west; central options run pricier and thinner.
Local safety: Same as country →
Cost figures: Approx. 2026 prices: transit hour ~EUR 3.40, Rijksmuseum ~EUR 22.50, Van Gogh ~EUR 24 (timed only), canal cruise EUR 18–25, mid-range meal EUR 20–40 per person.
