✈️ First 24 Hours
Abha International: rent right at the terminal (summer peak sells out — book with your flight). First evening: Soudah or Al Jarrah viewpoint an hour before sunset for the fog-sea show.
🗓️Best time to visit
June–August is peak resort season (18–28°C, mist and light rain) — the inverse of the rest of the peninsula; winters are cold and clear.
📸Top activities & landmarks
- Soudah mountains and Saudi's highest peak
- The colourful heritage village of Rijal Almaa
- Al Muftaha arts quarter and the high town
- The Soudah cable car above the mist
- Asir National Park and the Green Mountain
🏨Where to stay
Soudah resorts for the mountain mood; central Abha for dining and events. Summer sells out — book early.
⚠️Tips & warnings
Pack a jacket even in August (nights get genuinely cold). The Rijal Almaa descent is steep — drive gently; fog can kill visibility.
📍 On the ground
Getting around: A car is essential — sights scatter across distant ridges (Soudah 45 min, Rijal Almaa an hour down a switchback worth respect). Uber is city-only. Summer fog roads demand genuine patience.
🏨 Where do Gulf travelers stay?: New Abha and Al Soudah: coolest air, finest views — the genuine fog hotels. Central Abha and Al Muftaha: arts, souqs, the city's pulse. Al Khalidiyah/King Fahd Road: family aparthotels.
Halal & prayer places: Same as country →
Local safety: Abha lies in the Asir region near the Yemen border, where the border strip has seen intermittent security alerts (cross-border drones/missiles); the city itself is generally safe, but avoid approaching the border area and follow official advisories.
Cost figures: Summer hotels SAR 350–700 (Soudah tops it), dropping to 150–300 off-season. Soudah cable car ~SAR 80. Family furnished flats SAR 250–450 in summer.
